Public Art Programming
The Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation’s Community Mural Project is a creative placemaking initiative designed to highlight Lansdowne’s character and community. Under the artistic direction of Keyonna Butler, we will assemble a large-scale mural on polytab panels covering the Dollar Tree façade on Lansdowne Avenue. At the heart of the mural is Butler’s depiction of the Lansdowne Sycamore. Surrounding it will be 10x10-inch squares painted by community members, each reflecting what Lansdowne means to them, whether it is our spirit of volunteerism, lush greenery, supportive neighbors, rich diversity, or thriving artist community.
Community members can participate in two ways. They can join Butler in person during either our Juneteenth Mural Make-In (June 21, 9 AM–3 PM at Veterans Landing) or at a July 12th Mural Make-In (Utility Works 2 PM-4 PM). Or, they can pick up a blank polytab square at Utility Works anytime in June and July, create their design at home using acrylic paint or paint pens, and return it by August 15. The LEDC Art Committee will review submissions for space constraints and appropriateness and then work with Butler to assemble the final composition.
This project is the inaugural public art initiative of the LEDC Art Committee, following our adoption of a Public Art Policy in 2024. We thank Dollar Tree for providing the mural site and the Borough of Lansdowne, as well as our supporters, for their fiscal support. Going forward, we will be rotating this site with a new mural annually through a public RFP process, providing fresh color and community engagement to Lansdowne Avenue each year.
