This October, Feral Form Fantasies brings together the work of Alex Spalding, Tulia Day, and Lindsay Kovnat Davis in an exhibition at Kiosk Gallery in UtilityWorks (Lansdowne, PA) that explores the human figure through fantasy, transformation, and the imaginative relationship between people and the natural world.
Across painting and drawing, the exhibition presents bodies that exist somewhere between the familiar and the mythical. Women appear as icons, companions, dreamers, and shape-shifters, inhabiting worlds where glamour, vulnerability, instinct, and play converge. Rather than illustrating stories, the works invite viewers into psychological landscapes where identity is fluid and imagination reshapes the boundaries between the human and the animal.
Each artist approaches these themes from a distinct perspective. Alex Spalding’s vibrant figurative paintings combine bold color, pop-cultural aesthetics, and animal symbolism to create striking images that feel both iconic and emotionally enigmatic. Tulia Day’s intimate works reveal the body as a place of vulnerability, resilience, and quiet transformation, while Lindsay Kovnat Davis constructs surreal scenes in which women and cats become playful collaborators in reimagining intimacy and power.
Together, these practices ask what happens when the figure becomes more than a portrait. In Feral Form Fantasies, the body becomes a space where fantasy, memory, beauty, and instinct coexist, encouraging viewers to reconsider the stories we tell about identity and our connection to the wild.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors will also have opportunities to engage directly with these ideas through community programming, including a participatory Feral Figure Drawing event that welcomes artists and beginners alike to explore the expressive possibilities of the human figure in a relaxed, imaginative environment.
Feral Form Fantasies celebrates the enduring power of figurative art to transform perception, inviting audiences into a world where the feminine, the feral, and the fantastic exist not as opposites, but as expressions of the same creative impulse.
About the Artists:
Alex Spalding (b. 1985, Springfield, MO) is a self-taught figurative painter specializing in vibrant, stylized portraiture of women. Drawing from his love for commercial illustration and contemporary art, he merges those influences with expressive techniques and the innovative use of technology.
Before dedicating himself to the visual arts in 2023, Alex was immersed in a diverse range of creative pursuits, including dance music, managing indie record labels, and writing. This multidisciplinary background continues to inform the eclectic style of his work today. Alex lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.
Lindsay Kovnat Davis is a material and digital artist based in Philadelphia, PA with a BFA in Animation. She paints in gouache, watercolor and acrylic as well as producing sculptures created with air-dry-clay, epoxy and found objects. Lindsay’s animated music video for Plastic Little won Best Experimental Short at the “Philadelphia Film Festival” and she was awarded First Place at the “Super Girl themed 48-hour Film Festival” in Philadelphia, PA.
Lindsay had her first solo show September 2023 at Solas Studio in NYC. She has participated in group shows in New York, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Philadelphia. The most recent includes Goth Gala at The Jane Gallery, Philadelphia, Creativity Through Chaos at Dirty Franks, Philadelphia, Fur Babies at The Plastic Club, Philadelphia, Local Fare Gallery Pop-up, NYC, GAIN GREEN at the Fairmount House Gallery, Philadelphia, and The Patriot show at O’Flaherty’s. She has also curated at Secret Project Robot in New York.
She is a member of Philadelphia Animation Ensemble, Solas Studios in NY, Art Queens, and was mentored by the sculptor Rose Nestler through The Canopy Program of the NY Crit Club. She co-hosts as “Disco Ball” on the YouTube show, Getting Down with Disco & Brian and illustrated the book “Upside Down Town” with Penny Harris.
Tulia Day is a multi-disciplinary artist born in San Francisco and raised in Philadelphia, where she currently works and resides. In 2018, Tulia earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Hamilton College, where she received awards for her artistic achievements. After completing independent studies in observational painting and a studio internship with The Philadelphia Sketch Club, Tulia collaborated with local artists to create a weekly life drawing workshop in Philadelphia. This workshop, hosted by the Upstairs Smoking Section art collective, has run weekly from 2021 to present day, employing over 30 models and attended by well over 200 members of the collective. Tulia has exhibited work at galleries including Loft Abstract, The Philadelphia Sketch Club, Site Brooklyn, and Lore Degenstein.
Her portraits have been commissioned by patrons nationally and abroad. She is currently a co-curator and member of Upstairs Smoking Section Art Collective.
About the Gallery
This exhibition is organized by the Lansdowne Art Committee, a volunteer group of The Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation. The mission of the Lansdowne Arts Committee is to create, foster, and promote Lansdowne's identity as a vibrant and inspiring artistic community. The Lansdowne Art Committee is dedicated to nurturing creative expression, enhancing community engagement, stimulating economic growth, preserving and celebrating Lansdowne's diversity, and cultivating arts education and access.
The Kiosk Gallery is located in the front Lobby of Utility Works, a creative co-working space in Lansdowne PA*. Originally home to Delaware County Electric and built in the early 20th century, Utility Works* has been transformed into a creative co-working building that houses 23 art studios, a ceramics studio as well as a Maker Space.
